Crop Walk—2006 |
|
Deep Well to Kenya! In the Fall of 2006, our St. John’s Church Family was inspired to raise $5,000 during the Crop Walk for a deep well to be drilled somewhere in the world! We raised the money in four weeks! We were motivated because: * We learned that over 4,000 children die each day from contaminated water. * We learned that 1 out of 6 people in the world do not have safe drinking water. * We walked in memory of Jana Smith whose first Crop Walk was in 1976 when she was 10 years old. On Wednesday, May 16th, 2007, Joyce Holley, the Church World Service Coordinator from the Kansas City office, came to our church and presented us with the above plaque and told us that the well was drilled in Kenya, Africa. The picture shows Masai women lined up to use one of the wells. With a water source available, it frees up women and children from the long walks to obtain water and thereby allows more time for education and job opportunities along with being able to harvest more food to eat or sell. Here is a statement from John Kanyanya, Co-Chairperson Water Committee, Kasepa Village, West Pokot District: “You are welcome here. God is good. He has brought us together. You have really cared for us. This place is bad because of no water… Everyone is happy for the water which is coming. We don’t know what to give you, so we ask God to bless you!” Special thanks to: * Glenn Mercer and his granddaughter, Gracie, who raised over $1,000! * Jessie and Jo Smith who raised over $700! Thanks to all of our church family and friends who worked so hard to meet our goal! Thanks to everyone who donated money! |
